Review of What does it feel like by Sophie Kinsella

This book took me all of 3 hours to read and that was with me taking my time because I didn't want the book to end. Sophie Kinsella wrote this book and kept me on my toes the entire time!

Sophie Kinsella's novella, What Does It Feel Like?, offers a poignant and intimate exploration of a successful novelist's unexpected battle with a malignant brain tumor. Drawing from her personal experience with glioblastoma, Kinsella crafts a narrative that is both heart-wrenching and inspiring.

The story centers on Eve, a thriving author who suddenly awakens in a hospital bed, disoriented and with no recollection of how she arrived there. Her husband gently informs her that she has undergone surgery to remove a large, malignant tumor from her brain. This revelation propels Eve into a tumultuous journey of confronting her mortality, redefining her identity, and seeking solace in the familiar rhythms of her life.

Kinsella's portrayal of Eve's emotional and physical struggles is both raw and authentic. The narrative delves deep into the challenges of facing a life-threatening illness, the strain it places on personal relationships, and the resilience required to navigate such an ordeal. The novella is structured with each chapter presenting a vignette that captures different facets of Eve's experience, from the initial shock of diagnosis to the arduous path of rehabilitation.

Critics have lauded the novella for its bravery and warmth. One reviewer described it as "a brave, warm, at times funny, and ultimately optimistic thinly-veiled biography" that serves as "a love letter to all of Kinsella's fans." Kinsella's decision to fictionalize her personal battle with glioblastoma adds a profound layer of sincerity to the narrative. Her firsthand insights infuse the story with a depth of emotion that resonates deeply with readers. The novella not only sheds light on the physical and emotional toll of such a diagnosis but also emphasizes the importance of hope, love, and the small joys that make life meaningful.

In What Does It Feel Like?, Sophie Kinsella transcends her reputation for lighthearted romantic comedies, delivering a story that is both heartrending and uplifting. It's a testament to the human spirit's capacity to find light even in the darkest of times. This novella is a must-read for those seeking a narrative that beautifully balances vulnerability with resilience.
